Florida were down three with 30 seconds left in regulation, on a day when almost nothing fell from deep. They did not need a three. After a Florida free throw, Denzel Aberdeen hit a jumper with 0.8 seconds left to tie it at 68 and send the exhibition to overtime.
Overtime belonged to Baylor, and to two brothers. Kayden Mingo and Dylan Mingo scored all but two of Baylor's 14 points in the extra period, the Bears made 9 of 10 free throws, and Baylor beat Florida 82-76 on Sunday, October 18, at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville.
It does not count in the standings. It was still a loss for the team that starts the season first in our Top 32, and it came on the shooting.
Florida's cold day
Florida took 72 shots and made 25. From three, the Gators were 4 of 29. Aberdeen, who tied the game, was 3 of 17 from the field and 0 of 10 from deep.
"We left a lot of points on the board that way," Florida coach Todd Golden said.
The Gators did win the glass, 46-41, with 26 offensive rebounds. Rueben Chinyelu had 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Alex Condon had 13 and nine. Thomas Haugh led Florida with 19, nine of them at the line, and Boogie Fland scored 13.
"I need to use my voice more," Haugh said. "I didn't do that today well enough at all."
