Real Madrid beat Olympiacos 93-89 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Saturday to win the first EuroLeague SuperCup, the new curtain-raiser that puts the champions, the runners-up and two more invited teams in one building over one weekend. It was a rematch of the EuroLeague final in May, which Olympiacos won, and it is the first trophy of Pedro Martínez's time as Madrid's coach.

Walter Tavares was named the tournament's MVP. Madrid's scoring was spread across the roster: all 12 players who played got on the scoresheet, and five reached double figures. Timothé Luwawu-Cabarrot led the way with 12 points and two threes, Andrés Feliz, Mikael Jantunen and Jaime Pradilla scored 11 each, and Théo Maledon added 10 points with six assists. Pradilla also had five assists.

How the final went

Madrid led 24-15 after the first quarter. Olympiacos won the second quarter 28-23, so Madrid led only 47-43 at halftime, and it won the third 29-28, so Madrid led just 75-72 going into the fourth quarter. Madrid outscored Olympiacos 18-17 in the last ten minutes. Evan Fournier hit a three-pointer with about a minute left to make it 91-89, and Feliz finished a layup in the last seconds to settle it at 93-89.

Sasha Vezenkov led all scorers with 22 points for Olympiacos, making six of 12 shots and seven of eight free throws, with five rebounds and two steals. Fournier scored 14 with three threes, Jean Montero had 12 points and four assists off the bench, and Donta Hall scored 13 on 4-of-5 shooting from the field, making five of six free throws, with three steals.

Why Madrid won

The numbers point to two places. Madrid made 20 of 32 two-point shots, 63%, to Olympiacos's 19 of 45, and shot 50% overall (30 of 60) to 40% (27 of 67). Both teams made about the same share of their threes, Madrid 10 of 28 and Olympiacos eight of 22. Madrid also controlled the glass 44-30, with a 30-16 edge on the defensive boards, and made 23 of 26 free throws to Olympiacos's 27 of 37, which is 88% at the line against 73%.

Madrid was careless with the ball, and it was the one real blemish on an otherwise clean night at the line and on the boards. Its 23 turnovers fed 14 Olympiacos steals, but it still had 31 assists to Olympiacos's 24 and won by four.

The weekend

The SuperCup used a four-team Final Four format in Abu Dhabi on September 18 and 19. Olympiacos was in as the 2025-26 EuroLeague champion, Madrid as the runner-up, Fenerbahçe as the 2024-25 champion and Dubai Basketball as the host team. Madrid reached the final by beating Dubai Basketball 98-95 in overtime in Friday's semifinal, with Tavares scoring 20 points. Olympiacos beat Fenerbahçe 92-90 in the other semifinal, with Fournier scoring 19. Fenerbahçe took third place on Saturday with an 85-77 win over Dubai. The opposing coach in the final was Georgios Bartzokas.

What is next

The EuroLeague regular season opens on Thursday, September 24. Madrid's first game is away to Dubai Basketball at Coca-Cola Arena, the same team that took it to overtime in the semifinal.
