Phoenix Super LPG went 5-5 in the 2026 PBA Governors' Cup elimination round, was outscored by 4.5 points a game, and reached the quarterfinals. Terrafirma went 5-7, was outscored by 0.8, and did not. Both clubs won five games.
Three clubs missed the quarterfinals with a better margin than Phoenix: Terrafirma at -0.8, Blackwater at -2.2 and Meralco at -2.3. Phoenix's margin was the worst of any club that advanced.
The figures come from the published elimination-round results for all 13 clubs: 72 games, with each pair in a group meeting twice and our wins and losses matching the standings for every club. A separate results list agrees with 67 of the games and differs by a point on one, San Miguel's August 12 win over Titan, which we count as 143-113.
How the round was built
The 13 clubs were split into two groups. Group A had seven clubs, including the Macau Giant Pandas as the guest team, and played 12 games each. Group B had six and played 10. The top four in each group advanced to crossover best-of-five quarterfinals, and ties were broken by the point differentials of the tied clubs against each other.
That rule decided two seeds. NLEX and San Miguel both finished 9-3 in Group A. NLEX won the two meetings on points, 243 to 231, and took the first seed. In Group B, Ginebra and Phoenix both finished 5-5. Ginebra beat Phoenix 106-89 and lost 78-81, a net of +14, and took the third seed.
Every club against the line
| Club | Group | Record | Margin per game | Games decided by 5 or fewer | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NLEX | A | 9-3 | +16.3 | 2-3 | Qualified, first seed |
| San Miguel | A | 9-3 | +12.8 | 2-1 | Qualified |
| Converge | A | 8-4 | +11.1 | 3-1 | Qualified |
| TNT | A | 7-5 | +8.8 | 3-3 | Qualified |
| Terrafirma | A | 5-7 | -0.8 | 2-4 | Missed |
| Titan Ultra | A | 2-10 | -22.0 | 1-0 | Missed |
| Macau | A | 2-10 | -26.3 | 1-2 | Missed |
| Magnolia | B | 7-3 | +6.8 | 1-1 | Qualified, first seed |
| Ginebra | B | 5-5 | +2.2 | 1-1 | Qualified |
| Rain or Shine | B | 6-4 | 0.0 | 3-1 | Qualified |
| Phoenix | B | 5-5 | -4.5 | 3-0 | Qualified |
| Meralco | B | 4-6 | -2.3 | 2-3 | Missed |
| Blackwater | B | 3-7 | -2.2 | 0-4 | Missed |
Phoenix won all three of its games decided by five points or fewer. Two of them were against Meralco, by 98-97 and 105-101, and the third was 81-78 over Ginebra. Meralco, fifth in Group B, went 2-3 in such games and finished a win short at 4-6.
Blackwater went 0-4 in games decided by five or fewer. Its margin of -2.2 predicts about 4.5 wins, and it won three.
Why the cutoff looks different in each group
Group A's fourth qualifier, TNT, was 7-5. Group B's fourth, Phoenix, was 5-5. Terrafirma's 5-7 was the best record of a Group A club that missed, and Phoenix's 5-5, shared with Ginebra, was the lowest of a Group B club that made it. They have the same number of wins. Four of Group B's six clubs advanced and four of Group A's seven, so Group B left only two clubs out.
Group A's margins were also inflated by its two bottom clubs, as we show separately, which is part of why Group B looks closer. Group B was also the closer group. Its games were decided by an average of 10.4 points, against 19.2 in Group A, and two of its 30 games were decided by 30 or more. Group A had 14 of 42.
The quarterfinal result
Phoenix, the fourth seed from Group B, played NLEX, the first seed from Group A. NLEX won the series 3-0, by 97-92, 124-117 and 137-89. A 5-5 club with a margin of -4.5 lost three straight to a 9-3 club with +16.3.
What the numbers show, and what we read into them
The numbers show that qualification followed wins, not margin, in Group B, and that a club could advance with the worst margin of any qualifier. Phoenix won three games by four points or fewer, while Blackwater lost all four of its close ones.
What it means is our reading. A club's record over 10 games is a small sample, and close-game records over a handful of games are noisy. We do not claim Phoenix did not deserve to advance. The format said five wins in a group of six were enough, and Phoenix had them. What we can say is that a format ranking clubs by margin within each group would have put Blackwater in Phoenix's place, and one ranking all 13 by margin would have put Terrafirma there.
The test is Phoenix's next conference. A club with a margin of -4.5 over 10 games is expected to win about 3.5 to 3.9 of them, so a record nearer four wins in 10 than five would be the ordinary outcome.

Sichuan went 0-42 last season. It already has two wins
The Blue Whales are 2-6 after a winless 2025-26. Across the CBA, last season's table explains only part of this year's start: ten clubs' margins improved, ten fell, and six moved by 10 points or more.
